Palin Resigns, Alaskans Celebrate Early

I have to say that this was strange and unexpected but what else is new with her?

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says she is resigning from office.

She didn't say why she decided to step down, but the surprise announcement stirred speculation that she would focus on a bid for the 2012 Republican nomination for president.

The former Republican vice presidential candidate made the announcement from her home in suburban Wasilla on Friday morning. She said she would step down July 26.

Spokesman Dave Murrow says Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will be inaugurated at the governor's picnic in Fairbanks at the end of the month.

Palin was first elected in 2006 on a populist platform. But her popularity has waned as she waged in partisan politics following her return from the presidential campaign.
As BD writes in the comments, she must have screwed something up big time to not exploit her eventual lame duck status to promote herself nationally. Knowing her level of ambition though I'm going to posit that minus the aforementioned screw up she's laying the ground work for future political plans, either senatorial or presidential, rather than getting out of the spotlight just to save the taxpayers a few dollars. Now of course that will be a positive soundbite and talking point for her in the future but barely any politician does that, much less someone like Palin. I'm sure we haven't seen or heard the last of her just yet.

repsac3 also writes in the comments that this is all the fault of myself and my faithful hate monkey, Thade. Were that you were correct in that assessment my friend, although I will give Thade some of the credit. I had him doing some undercover monkey sabotage work up in Alaska a short while back. Nothing big, just pouring sugar into the gas tanks of Todd Palin's snowmachines and poking holes in Bristol Palin's diaphragm (on the off chance she chooses to use it), so perhaps that helped to shake things up at the Palin household. Hey, what can I say? That monkey loves to hate. Palin in 2012!

Both Liberal Values and PP predict there's something stirring in that there wood shed.

Maybe she just decided to get out on top. She knew she wasn't going to win re-election in AK. She may have realized she wasn't going to win the presidency either. If she gets out now, there are plenty of ways to scam the rubes who worship her. She and Todd are both grifters. They're only going to be fleecing the simple minded dolts who believe in her. So, good for you Todd and Sarah.

I get the impression that her ambitions lust for a slightly loftier goal than just scamming rubes ex DLB, although I wouldn't be surprised if that were a by-product of her eventual machinations.

I can remember when just the mention of this woman would elicit 10,000 respones.

She seems to have over-exposed herself lately PP, and not in the way I would like. Plus there's still Michael Jackson's funeral to discuss...

It's hard to really predict what is happening here and why given who is making the decisions. Lord knows trying to get inside her thought process is... well... you can finish the joke out on your own terms.

But, I would not be at all shocked if Palin (or someone advising her) thinks this is a great political ploy. She leaves for personal reasons, blames the "liberal media" for exploiting her family's troubles, and then reemerges in two years "strong and determined" to fight the librul meanies in the press and take back Washington from the fascist Marxists queers who hate God.

She can decry so many others for "personal attacks" on her and her family. Yet, she has hurled all kinds of invective that has dismissed everyone who isn't like her as "un-Amuriken."

I really bounced back and forth between McCain and Obama for a while. Palin shined a big bright light on the path before me within about three days of her VP selection. Her speech at the RNC made my decision iron-clad.
